James Dinosaur Gurney

James Gurney a really interesting author due to him not only being the person who created the award winning books known as Dinotopia but also was the illustrator for the books, since all the work was his doing from the story and artwork to the actual design of the whole world he is an amazing person.

Now his art style is quite interesting since he depicts a harmony between humanity and nature, with over 100 pieces of artwork which are all painted in oils now that is a lot of work and effort which amazes me since if he made a large mistake he would have to start again and if he didn't back up his design he would have to draw it all out again.

From an interview he has done in the past he explains that when he worked for National Geographic he went around to multiple dig sites and drew visualisations of the what the ruins might look like, which evloved in 1988 to Waterfall City which was supposed to be a combination of Venice and Niagara Falls.
A lot of his work is created by originally making models, maquettes, humans models in costume and poses and do charcoal studies.

Some of his work have me thinking of romanticism but he also has a few scientific ideas in a more fantasy type world in my opinion. One of the most interesting pieces of information for me was he tried to draw an image of some prehistoric fire fighters which he liked to he showed his friend how was a professional fire engine designer and the first thing he said was it wouldn't work, but instead of becoming defensive he sat there with him and thought of an idea of how it would work.

I always enjoy this guy's work since they are designed as a portrait compared to other artists as well as the unique thought behind it. How i see this relevant is not because of the style but how he does he's character and scene development and how he delivers a fantasy genre so easy with the use of illustrations   now maybe the only piece of relevance he has is his environment design but he still inspires me when it comes to character and set design so that is why he is one of my artists.
