The barbarian normally are shown as strong, savage, bloodthirsty and really dumb but ones such as Conan are depicted as smart, strategic, good thieves and with high morals in certain aspects, now this may not sound true but if you read Conan road of kings edition 7 in the book he finds himself stuck with conspirators against the king when royal guards burst in, he fights to save himself then notices the woman's daughter got left behind by accident so he ran over saved her and left the scene with her. Now that doesn't sound like how they are depicted but the real Germanic barbarians are not like they are depicted either.
THE TERM BARBARIAN is a term used by the romans for people who are less civilised than they are and by being uncivilised bring the fall of order aka rome.
As you can probably see from my earlier artist study of Frank Frazetta the godfather of fantasy quite a few of these pictures are his while a few are anime and video games all depict a barbarian sort of race or personality and all of them are deadly.
Real barbarians were the Germanic people during the roman rule which held up a good defence even though their technology was limited
